Hello!

I am considering opening up the side of our garage and converting it into a pool house/orangery with some nice glass partitions. I am attaching two sketches I have drawn. My local building market here in France has a lot of interesting lumber dimensions available, including solid beams that are 12x24 cm. I'm wondering if such a beam would suffice or if I need to order a steel beam?

The garage width inside is 610 cm, and the height up to the roof is 265 cm at one end and 440 cm at the other.

The planned opening will be 440 cm wide, and I'm thinking of using a 5m long 12x24 cm beam over the opening (red) and 8x22 for the posts (blue).

The roof is a typical French tiled roof, and I'm not sure what they might weigh. The three roof beams holding it up are 10x22.

I've checked https://www.byggbeskrivningar.se/dimensionering/pulpettaksbalkar-och-balkar/ but there I only get suggestions for laminated wood, not regular sawn timber.

Tips are greatly appreciated,
Robert

Counting backwards, it seems that the garage roof is only dimensioned for its own weight. If you apply the same loads to your opening beam, then 12x24 should be sufficient with margin. A bit roughly calculated since some measurement details are missing. In Sweden, the snow load is usually the dominant load, so glued laminated timber almost always becomes necessary. I assume the location is in the south of France.

Yes, that's correct, southern France, near Montpellier. A couple of centimeters of snow fell here once five-six years ago and it's still talked about, so snow load is probably not something we need to think about.

What additional measurements are missing?

I lived for a summer month in Anduze, which is a little north of Montpellier, so I probably have a decent sense of what it means climate-wise. The challenge lies in building so that it is bearable to stay there. I miss the c/c distances between the roof beams.

Nice to hear, it's a beautiful area - Anduze is only a quarter of an hour away from us!

The roof beams are cc 150

What a small world! I actually guessed 150, so my calculation is quite accurate.
