I'm planning to build a slat fence around the house. My idea is to have 90x90 posts and 45x45 for the slats and top rail. The slats will be painted white before installation. But I want the posts and top rail in dark wood oil/stain like walnut. The posts will not be in contact with the ground, but will be anchored in concrete foundations. Can I use untreated wood or do they need to be pressure-treated? The same question goes for the top rail. I will stain all posts before installation and paint all slats before installation.

Wooden deck with slatted fence, featuring vertical posts and horizontal slats. The posts appear untreated, while the slats are painted white. Dense greenery in background.
I took a picture from Google! That's how I want my fence.

Yes, they can be untreated if you were planning to oil/paint them anyway.

That's exactly what I've done, and it works perfectly. However, I chose to cover the top rail with metal because it is most exposed and lies flat. This means rainwater will stand on it. But using metal significantly extends its lifespan.

If you choose a metal in the same color as the painted slats, it will hardly be noticeable.

You can also choose a cap rail that is planed for the purpose and, therefore, not entirely flat, alternatively cut the posts at a slight angle so the cap rail tilts.

But then you can't place your beer there?

The primary purpose of the coping stone is, after all, to serve as a resting place for the beer glass/bottle ;)

Nothing that a swirling burkhållare can't solve ;)

Awesome, thanks!! I have made some changes to the plan and will probably go with battens instead of 45 studs. I think it will look better with thinner slats. There are also pre-primed ones, which cost 2 SEK more per meter. Could definitely be worth it! Is one coat of paint enough? I was thinking of oiling the posts and cap rail with China oil, apparently available in dark oil. I'd appreciate any better ideas. I'm short on patience, so something that dries quickly/absorbs into the wood would be great.
The posts will be 2500mm apart, is that too much for a batten? How easily do they warp or twist?

If you paint/oil, then the wood is not untreated. Impregnation is a type of protective treatment, oil and paint is another.

The important thing is to use the right type of paint. If you use oil, you should apply new every year.

What! No, yuck every year! I can't handle that. Not on a fence. Damn it, I really don't want impregnated, I want dark posts.
I wrote wrong regarding Läkt, they are not primed, but it was studs model narrower than 45 and it would have been nice. But the primed studs are only available at Bauhaus. Such a shame.

There are stains available to buy for pressure-treated wood to make it dark brown. Or mixed oil.

But it depends on how long you want it to last.

It's indeed a fence, so preferably for a very long time. But I'll just have to oil it every year then, maybe I can trick the wife into thinking how fun it is to oil fence posts. :-)

Or you place a prutt (sup) at each slat so maybe you'll even oil more times per year  :wow:

 Taken!!

Then I would have built it with pressure-treated wood and then stained and painted it in year 2.

Even if you carefully maintain untreated wood, it usually develops weak spots where it rots after maybe 8-10 years. But of course, you can just replace those. But it's a question of how much maintenance you want; personally, I hate painting fences.

I'm going crazy trying to figure out where to place the cc posts! I have 4.70m on one side and 11.36m on the other side. The battens I plan to use are: https://www.byggmax.se/virke/läkt/22x45-lockläkt-vitgrundad-p08020046
Available in 2.7m and 5.4m. I was thinking of using 70x70 impregnated posts. But I get a headache trying to determine where the posts should be placed. I want staggered joints, if possible. Please help me :-)

95 posts, 2.35 between posts and horizontal 21x70 outer panel! Do you think it will be crazy? The slats are attached to the posts without in-between so you emphasize the posts, so to speak.
