Hi, I have repaired my old chimney and painted it white. After a while, the paint cracked in a few spots. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? I'm thinking of removing all the loose bits and removing all the loose plaster, then replastering and painting again. Do you think this will work and which plaster mix do you think I should use?
Attaching a picture where a crack has formed in the paint (I have also peeled off some loose paint)
What kind of paint did you use? From the little I can see in the photo, the plaster doesn't seem bad at all, maybe different in other places?, or it's not visible. It can look like that if lime paint was used on the facade and not watered correctly before/after.
I don't have a direct solution, but I think there must be a reason why the paint is peeling. It seems unusual to me that this would happen indoors, and so quickly. Maybe there was a lot of loose dust/mortar gravel on the surface when it was painted? Perhaps the paint can't handle contact with strongly alkaline materials like the plaster? Or it might be as simple as applying the paint too thickly at once.
Hello and thanks for the reply. The chimney is used when firing and after a while becomes quite warm in places. The chimney breast is painted with white oil paint 2-3 times. I am attaching an image taken from the backside of a piece that I tore off, where you can see that there is a bit of mortar remaining, although very little, but I need to fill this up before repainting so that it aligns with the rest of the chimney breast.
