Hello!

I tried to put up a terrace awning measuring 3.6x2.0m but ran into a problem. I didn't quite anticipate the issue would be with mounting the brackets for the awning. The wood screw doesn't really grip the wood panel; it goes in but stops partway and doesn't hold.

Does anyone have experience on how to secure it reliably? I was thinking of installing a 28x120 beam onto the panel first and then trying with the brackets?

Anyone knowledgeable who can guide me?

You cannot attach the awning to just the panel. You must find the supporting stud construction behind it and attach to it. Either the top plate that runs horizontally at the top of the wall or to a vertical stud. The awning brackets do not need to be symmetrical so you can shift them sideways to screw into vertical studs.

Yes, I suspected that I would need to attach the brackets to the studs, but is there an efficient way to find them to ensure it’s done correctly? And is it sufficient to attach them to the vertical studs, or should I aim to set up a horizontal beam to which I then attach the brackets?

My first awning was attached only to the panel's horizontal nail batten. You could see that the entire panel, including the nail batten, had come loose several millimeters under the attachments. I mounted the new one with long French screws into the standing studs. You might need to remove a few boards to find where the studs are located, or measure if you can find them more easily from the inside. It might also be good to screw a spacer between the stud and the panel, because when you tighten your screws, you can quite easily crack or deform the panel boards.
