Hello,
I want to replace a beam supporting the outer wall (part of a knee wall) in a log cabin with a steel profile.
This is to remove the knee wall and create more space.

But what strength does a 180x180 solid wooden beam have?
I can find information on laminated beams and some simpler construction timber.
But a solid beam, what can I choose to replace it with?

There are many possibilities, e.g., VKR 120x120x4.5.

Is there a possibility to use a rod with thicker material? It would be easier to hide.

Old wooden beams in an attic with a red line marking a beam under discussion for replacement with a steel profile along the outer wall.

It's the red-marked beam I would like to remove and replace with a steel profile along the outer wall instead. The outward pull is my problem, the rafters are to be reinforced with a 45x120 on each side. Along the other long wall, they have just cut the corresponding beam without replacing it with anything, which I don't feel completely comfortable with.

I'm not quite sure I understand that question? I am not sure (without having seen more of the whole) that the braces can be removed. They exist because of the elevated wall life.

Angle steel 120x120x13 is also fine.
