Hello,

We have a part of a brick wall that is connected to a chimney. We wish to remove this remaining part of the brick wall as it is in the way. What we are wondering is whether the brick wall might have any load-bearing/supporting function or if it is completely safe to remove it. We plan to bring in a chimney sweep to give an assessment. But what do you think?

if it looks like that, it's guaranteed that there's a smoke channel in that section that sticks out and then turns inward. It does look very narrow, but if no one has demolished that part of the wall before, I'm almost entirely sure that's the case. I think I glimpse some sort of eave through some window as well, so it might have originally been an attic and that's why they did it that way.

Yes, it's an attic apartment. The terrace is under renovation, hence the outdoor furniture in the living room :)

I also think it looks a bit too narrow to contain a flue. If I stand on the terrace and look at the roof, there's a chimney there, but it starts about 50 cm into the wall from point 2 in the image below. Line 1 in the image below illustrates how far the chimney stack protrudes, which is about 50 cm from the wall at point 2. It's the brick wall after the line at point 3 that we would like to remove. Can a chimney sweep say if it's possible to remove it, do you think?

As Stefan1972 says, it is likely a smoke/extraction channel, it should therefore be at least about 38 cm wide.
