Hello!
I am planning to build a garage/carport with a shed roof, model higher 2.50m-3.80m.
6-6.5m wide, 7.5m long. One long side is formed by the house gable (the highest).
Now I wonder where I can get 6.5m plus studs, which studs I should use? Finger jointed? Glulam beams? Dimension? Minimum roof slope? Price of studs/beams?
I will have shingles on the roof.
Hope someone has useful info about this, thanks in advance.

some beams do not handle that width with 2 supports (2 walls) without you considering glulam beams, and they won't be slender either. I would guess about 300x90mm. As for the slope, I have chosen 10 degrees, which should be seen as a minimum (Skåne) and with a metal roof. If you live further north in the country, you must take snow masses into account.

saturnus: Delicious, exactly the design I want too... I have now decided to make a partition with posts spaced 450cm apart, then I should be able to manage with regular 45x195mm??
How big is the garage in the picture?

I used the garage book to size my carport. Available at many libraries.

Garageboken - Bokus bookstore

I built freely according to the forest industry's drawings and needed to resize because I wanted a heavier roof than the sheet metal roof that is standard. I chose to go up in quality rather than size.

Considering building a carport that will connect to the garage. The disadvantage is that the carport's shed roof will have an opposite slope compared to the garage's shed roof slope. I'm not quite sure what to do. Should I build the carport's roof over the garage and have a large height difference on one side, or should I not connect the garage and carport, leaving a gap of a few cm? Feel free to suggest how I should build it. I will post pictures of the garage so you get a clearer picture of my problem.

I've been thinking for a while and I think it would be best if I let the slope go towards the street instead. Check the attached file. I want to know your opinions.

  • House driveway with car, proposed slope shown by red line toward street. Black posts and brown door are visible. Seeking opinions on driveway slope plan.
wolffi: I think it's more attractive when the lean-to roof slopes away from the house and it might be more practical too. Have you considered changing the direction of the garage roof so that it slopes away from the house and then connects it with the carport? It will of course incur a cost, but purely aesthetically, I think it would look the best. But that's just what I think.....

The best thing would have been to change the slope of the garage roof. But unfortunately, that's not possible because then I would end up inside the neighbor's property line, and I would also have to dig down pipes for the stormwater, which I wouldn't be keen on. If I have the slope towards the street, I can use the house's stormwater pipe.

The construction is now underway. I think this will turn out well. What do you think?

Looks good! Feel free to show more pictures as the construction progresses!

Battens are screwed in place

  • Support battens being screwed into place on a wooden carport structure beside a yellow house.

A few more pictures of the construction. It's almost finished. Need to install a door and cover the side.

  • A carport construction nearing completion, with a motorcycle, cars, and a trash bin. The side awaits a door installation and covering.
  • Carport construction with parked cars, showing a metal roof. Remaining work includes door installation and side covering.
Look how great! And there, a funny yellow toy peeks out from under the new roof ;)

Yes, it's dad's little sweetheart ;D. Here are some more pictures. Cost so far 20000kr

saturnus: läckert, precis den designen skall jag ha också...har nu bestämt mig för att göra en mellanvägg med stolpar på avståndet 450cm, då borde jag klara mig med vanliga 45x195mm?? How big is the garage in the picture?
Sorry for the delay in response. The garage is 8.5 X 7 meters, under the roof there is an additional 3.5 X 10 meters = the roof is 110 sqm. Glulam beams = 270 X 90mm
