"old-fashioned" wood paneling on houses
Hello!
We are interested in installing cladding on the house. Vertical (about 1 m) at the bottom, horizontal up to the floor of the upper floor, and vertical again on the upper floor.
Do you have any knowledge about how to handle the moldings and "frames" that are used to cover the "joints"? We don't know anyone with such cladding that we can sneak a peek at... How do you make them weather-tight against rain and snow? There will be gaps no matter what you do in the "tongue and groove recesses."
Do you have any suggestions or even pictures?
Grateful for your response.

Don't know if answers can be provided, but we have standing lock-board paneling and tongue and groove horizontal. If this leads to detailed questions, I can always go out and look or take photos of details if you want.

Jalas: We have done/are doing roughly what you have in mind. Visit our website and you might get some tips and ideas. The "Spontfördjupningarna" can be filled with sealing compound or have a protective board mounted over them. Just like Mr Beach, I can provide detailed images if desired.
Thank you for your answers!
Mr Beach: We have actually sneaked a peek at your house... (We also live in the Sundsvall area..)
Immobil: We envisioned our panel very similar to yours. Thanks for the detailed pictures. Do you have a profiled list that breaks? (A pre-bought one?) Where did you find it?
Sveno: What about the water on the horizontal board? Doesn't it stay there?
Many thanks! /Jalas

The board is chamfered so that the upper edge slopes away from the house. In other words, water drains off from it.
Take a stroll and sneak a peek at facades. I think that chamfered, tongue-and-groove paneling often used in the early 1900s is very attractive. If you check out my www under Byggnadsvård, there is a link to the Stockholm County Museum's building maintenance page. There's a lot of interesting reading about old houses there.
It was good that I went out and peeked at the facade, because I discovered some mold and moss or algae growth here and there. I'm considering washing the facade this summer. Could it be worth the effort, you think?

The horizontal "molding" that slopes slightly is a 28 x 95 mm. I mill it myself using the hand router. Funny that you ask, as several people here have wondered where it comes from. I even had a visit from a professional house renovator who wondered where I bought it ;D.jalas said:
