Situation: a metal hook holds a door against a wall. The wall mounting broke after probably many years, screw and plug fell out.
Metal hook holding a door against a wall, with a loose drywall plug and screw. Hand holding metal hook showing damaged wall anchor area.

Wall: semi-porous plaster/brick/mortar (100+ years old apartment building)
Large hole in a textured wall, created by a removed anchor and screw; visible uneven edges and some surrounding wear.

Hole: Relatively large because the old plug tore out a bit on the way out.

Screw: significantly smaller than the hole, can't easily switch to a larger one as it is attached to the metal hook.
A metal hook attached to a wall, with a screw partially inserted, used to hold a door in place. The wall appears porous and old, causing attachment issues.

Already tried with a regular yellow plastic plug that fit the screw but doesn't come close to filling the hole. Also tried filling the hole with pieces of the old plug and other junk but it doesn't work.

Is there any kind of plug that fills the large hole and allows me to use the old smaller screw? That should be the SMART way to solve it. But I can't find anything at the hardware stores.

(I already understand that one could essentially fill the hole with some compound and drill new and plug - or just fill the old hole and drill a new one a bit away and plug, etc. But I believe in reuse.)

  • Metal hook on wall with loosened wall attachment and large hole from old wall plug in plaster/brick, near radiator.
  • A metal hook holding a door against a wall, with a broken wall fixture. Hand holding hook near a large hole in a plaster/brick wall in an old apartment.
Fill the hole with Husfix, epoxy, or something else that might be suitable after you've cleaned it as well as possible.
But, instead of waiting for it to cure and drilling a new hole, insert the plug where you want it, so it can settle in and cure in place. Then just screw in your eye & hook when it's dry and hard again.
