Here comes a first thread from me but probably not the last since we recently bought our first house. Unfortunately, we don't get access until the end of July.
We're considering building a conservatory for the next season and in connection with that, replacing three windows with sliding doors or a larger glass section with swing doors. I'm unsure if the wall with windows is load-bearing since, according to the plan, there's a "carrying beam" just over a meter outside the current window section. At the same time, it seems that there are posts of 70x105 between each window, which feels substantial.
Can anyone determine if the wall is load-bearing or not? Thanks!
Mobile phone photos of fragments of crumpled paper drawings are not optimal when trying to answer your question. Probably, there is a beam above the posts that are located between the windows. To do what you want, you need to replace what is there today with a stronger beam (suggested glue-laminated timber) and new columns that the beam rests on.
No, that sounds reasonable... That's what I managed to photograph when we signed the contract . I'll simply have to wait until I get access and can scan the drawings. Of course, there's something on the window posts, and maybe it's load-bearing together with the "Bärlina 45x220" that is located 1400mm from the window wall. I'll get back with updated drawings in about a month!
Then it's absolutely not the end of the world if I need to reinforce either above the new window section or the load-bearing beam at the far end, the plan is not for the sliding doors to be wider than the current windows, so there's room on both sides for columns.
Thanks for taking a look!
