Hello!
What is this? It was lying on a large stone in our garden and it was extremely dusty when I tried to remove it. It seems to be a dumping ground for various construction materials but I don't know if this is some form of ground fabric or if it is some kind of asbestos cloth? Does anyone think they know?

  • Frayed cloth on a rock surrounded by moss and wood chips, possibly construction debris, questioned if it is geotextile or asbestos fabric.
  • Moss-covered rocks with fibrous material and wood debris scattered around, possibly construction waste or fabric-like material in a garden setting.
Most likely, it is regular fiber cloth/ground cloth. However, it can still be troublesome to remove even without asbestos content.

You can easily check with a lighter if it burns, then it is fiber fabric/ground fabric and it is relatively harmless even if it is ugly.

As long as it's harmless, it can stay. It was mostly the dust and the long fibers that worried me.

Does it burn?

I haven't tested it, I'll have to do that next time I'm there. I tried to burn another "suspekt" material which didn't burn, but possibly it was because it was a bit damp so I'll have to "burn on" a bit more next time.

If it's not on fire, you might consider conducting an asbestos test.

Yes, that's probably what I'll have to do. There is some old construction material in a pile and I'm a bit worried about what might be hidden in it. Unfortunately, it's quite close to the house.

Why would it be asbestos?

I think it looks a bit like asbestos and it's next to a pile of various old building materials that seem to have been buried. Hence my thoughts on whether it could be some sort of asbestos fabric or similar.

It's easy to rule out if it burns, then you hardly have anything to worry about.

Old fiber cloth dusts an insane amount. Seems very likely so you can be at ease.

There is fiber cloth made of fiberglass too, it likely won't burn well either. Non-combustible doesn't have to mean asbestos in this case.

True, but combustible means it's not asbestos.
