Hello!
I am all thumbs.
Can someone give me some tips on how to put up a shelf (i.e., drilling, etc.) in what I believe is a load-bearing wall?
What should I consider? What should I drill with?

Whether the wall is load-bearing or not does not matter for something as small as a regular shelf.

The question instead becomes what material the wall is made of and exactly how big the shelf is and what you plan to put on the shelf.

If it's a plaster wall, plaster expanders work well. If it's a concrete wall, plug+screw

it is a concrete wall.
The shelf I am going to put up is a regular IKEA shelf - one that looks like a wide plank simply. Won’t have too heavy things on it.
So the best thing is to drill with a hammer drill and then use wall plugs?

I think so. Just make sure to have the right size of drill bit in relation to the plug.

And make sure to have sturdy plugs + screws for that shelf. I would at least go with 70mm screws. It doesn't hurt to be on the safe side...

Also buy the right type of plug - Nylon plugs, not the usual yellow, red, brown, or blue plastic plugs. 95% of all wood screws sold are hardened and sharp, and they cut into the plastic plug, whereas a nylon plug resists and expands instead.
