Hello!
We have moved into a new home and now it's time to spruce up the staircase. I'm extremely annoyed by these (see photo) that go all the way up to the ceiling. Does anyone know if they have a load-bearing function in any way, or if I can just cut them down to the same height as the rest of the railing? And if they are "load-bearing," shouldn't it be possible to stabilize the railing in another way?

  • Vertical posts extending from railing to ceiling, with arrows pointing at them, next to a staircase and a potted plant.
It can't be answered based on just the image.
It must be investigated on-site how the railing/posts are constructed.

How are the posts secured under the floor?

A
With the thin fence, there will be flutter if you cut them off.

That railing will lose all stability if you cut it.

I agree that it was incredibly badly done. Manufacture and install new posts that you attach to the stairwell instead.

With the weak timber in the fence and removing it towards the roof, the fence won't stand steadily. It will sway under stress. Achieving something with thicker posts with only floor mounting, in a neat way, will be incredibly difficult or impossible.

Right! Thanks for the tips!

Ok, what a shame! That's what I suspected, that they have an important function. I'll have to figure out how to solve this so it looks nicer but maintains stability. Thanks for the help🙏🏾
