I'm going to replace the gable panel on a house from 1964, and as far as I know, it hasn't been replaced before.
It is reverse board and batten siding with 75mm base boards and 150mm battens, and about 100mm between the base boards.
Behind the base boards, there is only wind barrier and then the framing.

The current boards are about 25mm thick, which means the panel currently extends 50mm out.
I want to try to build out as little as possible while still allowing enough air to pass behind (or is 100mm between the base boards sufficient?)

Some solutions I have read about... but I would appreciate your input!

1. Nail new panel the same way as now, but use asphalt board behind instead of wind barrier. Total thickness would then be 12mm + 22mm (base board) + 22mm = 56mm
2. Wind membrane + horizontal nailing battens + panel = 25 + 22 + 22 = 69mm
3. Wind membrane + horizontal nailing battens + facade plywood + batten = 59mm (plywood acts as the base board and the batten is more "decorative" and provides some protection)

The wind barrier is broken in many places, so it needs to be replaced. I thought I might as well put up new boards then?
 
The facade looks pretty healthy for being 60 years old; if you take care of it a bit now, it will probably outlive you. I think you can be satisfied with taping any damages in the wind barrier and replacing the occasional board if you find any rot.

It looks like the metal flashings on the gable need attention first; secondly, window maintenance, and if money, time, and energy allow, it wouldn't hurt to paint the facade this year.
