Hello,

I have a wooden house from the 1920s with a natural stone foundation. The basement is currently quite dull, and there's some moisture in it. I use a dehumidifier when needed, but I'm also considering sprucing up the basement a bit. I've read that you can whitewash it, both to make it lighter and more pleasant, and because the lime is supposed to be good against any moisture problems. I will use the basement as a wine cellar, storage, and rustic workspace.

How should I proceed? It's a bare stone foundation with quite large gaps between the stones in some places, and I'd like to use the right material. Is it a coarser base mortar and then lime mortar? I've read that you shouldn't use material that is too hard, as it can crack with movement, meaning the joint must be a bit "soft" - is that correct?

What are your opinions - Is it a pointless endeavor that just costs time and money?

*bump*

Does nobody have any advice on how I should proceed?

I've tried to read up on what kind of mix it should be to level the walls (hydraulic lime plaster it seems).
Which of all the types should one use - is there any sensible variant at K-rauta?
