I am looking for a fitting but don't quite know what it is called. It is a square tube with a fastening device (like a plate) at the bottom and it is used to attach wooden posts. The idea is probably to prevent the wood from rotting so quickly. I am planning to build a small roof above the garage door so that snow doesn't end up in front of it this winter.

What is this fitting called and are they available for purchase at hardware stores?

Thank you in advance

Is this something like what you have in mind? [link]
Not quite. It is a square tube that you slide onto the actual wooden post. It functions as support and rot protection.

Stone post? [link]
Close, but not quite :-)
Your link shows a support that you drive into the ground. What I mean is a support that you can screw into the surface, otherwise it is probably similar to that, i.e. square tube.
