Where to buy steel beam?
Page 1 of 2
- Where can private individuals buy steel beams for, for example, relieving a load-bearing wall?
- Those of you who have done similar interventions, where have you turned to procure the necessary steel beams?
Please feel free to share tips regarding places to purchase/sell and where to get price information.

Forgot to mention it @GoForIt
Preferably Trelleborg, but otherwise the Malmö area.
Good that you mention it because there may actually be others from the Jönköping area in the future who need steel beams. Then you can turn to Abrahamssons Järn that you recommended!
But I know there are also others like StenaStål and similar larger companies that deliver throughout the country, so it's good to mention them regardless.

Now, I don't know how it is generally, but the local scrapyard here has a great handle on what they have out in the yard. And it gets cheap. Just the other day I went and bought some steel pipes for a stove. 115mm steel pipe with about 4mm thickness. A piece about 4m long and a 90° bend with a meter in each direction. With the current price, it came to just about 300 SEK. I think that's a bargain.
You can really say that's a bargain
I myself need an overhead HEA beam 180 at 3960 mm and two HEA beam posts 120 at 2250 mm. Looking at the price at, for instance, stenastal.se, montano.se, tibnor.se, begroup.se, etc. it amounts to about 5000 SEK for the whole setup.
HEA 180 weighs 35.5 kg/m and costs about 17 SEK/kg => 35.5 kg/m * 3.96 m * 17 SEK/kg * 1.25 VAT = 2987 SEK
HEA 120 weighs 19.9 kg/m and costs about 17 SEK/kg => 19.9 kg/m * 2.25 m * 17 SEK/kg * 1.25 VAT = 951 SEK
Total around: 2987 SEK + (951 SEK * 2 pcs) => 4890 SEK
In addition to this, in my case, there are 3 cuts because the beams are otherwise sold in full lengths of 10.1/12.1/15.1 m, sometimes 4.1/6.1 m. Approximately 187.5 SEK/cutting including VAT. Also, a delivery cost of about 800-1000 SEK including VAT for home delivery. Crane truck costs about 1000 SEK/hour to lift them into place.
With everything calculated, it amounts to about 7500 SEK including VAT.

What are you going to have upstairs in the LOKVERKSTAD ?? Check the load-bearing capacity.
Check on VKR, lighter, stiffer for load-bearing beams with a smooth exterior.
Otherwise, definitely a metal recycling company, they have a lot on the shelf.

I have actually done it @13th Marine. At least on their website. The prices seem to be the same everywhere, which feels a bit strange that there are such small margins, if any?
Price range 16.95-17.60 SEK/kg excluding VAT I have encountered so far.
stalitrelleborg.se, for instance, charges 17.60 SEK/kg excluding VAT or 22.00 SEK/kg including VAT. Same price for HEA 120 and HEA 180.
HEA 180 => length: 3.96 m => weight: 140.58 kg => price: 3092.76 SEK
HEA 120 => length: 2*2.25 m => weight: 2*44.775 kg => price: 2*985.05 SEK => 1970.10 SEK
Total sum: 5062.86 SEK

As mentioned earlier, metallteknik sells beams, and once you've built them into a wall, it doesn't show that they have been used before.
Scrap costs 80 öre/kg, nice beams a few kronor, everything is negotiable.

@Leif in Skåne You mentioned VKR earlier. How does it differ from HEA? I'm mostly thinking about the building height. Naturally, I want as much open area as possible and I don't care at all whether it's HEA, HEB, HEM, IPE, UNP, UPE, KCKR, KKR, VCKR, VKR... .... PTSD, ADHD
I want it to "protrude" as little as possible so that I get as much free space as possible.
