Hi,

I've just had a cassette installed in my fireplace. In connection with this, the damper/knob was removed from the brick wall above, which has led to the mortar there being lighter and differing from the rest of the wall. I got a tip to mix joint compound with water and brush it on the mortar to even out the color differences, but unfortunately, the result wasn't very good. Now I'm looking for better methods to color the mortar so that it blends in and matches the original wall.

The brick wall is from the 1960s and has become discolored with lighter spots above the fireplace. I assume it's due to the heat fluctuations from the fireplace affecting the color tone of the stone. The goal is to freshen up the whole wall and achieve a more uniform appearance. As it stands, the wall on the left is considerably fresher than the one on the right.

I have also tried cleaning with diluted hydrochloric acid to try to bring out the red color and remove white discolorations, but it seems to have bleached the stone further. Now I'm unsure how to proceed without worsening the situation.

Two questions really:

1. How do I freshen up the actual brick/stone color?
2. How do I best match the mortar?

So does anyone here have tips or advice on how I can best go about restoring or evening out the color tone on the bricks and the mortar? All ideas and experiences are greatly appreciated!

Hello again! Anyone have a good idea on how to get a more even finish across the entire brick wall? I still want to keep the brick look.
