Hello,

We are planning to tear down a wall, and we are not sure if it is load-bearing in our new house. I'd like to schedule this so we can start as soon as we get access.
But the question is, is there any way to find out in advance if the wall is load-bearing or not?
What I know is that the wall is plastered.

If you look at the drawings, it's the wall between the kitchen and living room (the part I've marked in red) that is to be demolished.

Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Floor plan sketch showing a red-marked wall between kitchen and living room, questioning if it's load-bearing.
  • Cross-section of a house showing structural elements, with a focus on identifying a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and living room.

In all likelihood, it is load-bearing, as you have a truss system with an occupied attic. It supports both the lower chord of the truss and the floor of the upper level.

Thank you very much for your response! I have, of course, suspected that it is load-bearing, but I hesitated a bit when I was there looking because it felt thin and like a regular interior wall.

I will contact a carpenter to do the work.
Thanks again!

To be completely sure, one should look at the construction drawings.

Interventions in load-bearing walls should be dimensioned by a structural engineer, and before the work begins, you should have an approved building notification. Carpenters are not trained to dimension beams and pillars.
