Spillage of mortar on firebrick

Hi,

I have now laid firebrick (quite a few, 115 bricks) inside an outdoor grill. However, there has inevitably been some spillage and mortar stains.

Is there a good way to remove these, I've tried water and a scrub brush without success Does a weak solution of hydrochloric acid work?

Hydrochloric acid (diluted) or brick cleaner, rinse with clean water afterwards. Beware of eyes and hands.

Thanks for the quick response! Does it work on yellow firebrick as well, I've read so many mixed things online...
