I am aligning a ceiling with spaced paneling. I'm now at the chimney and wondering if I need to maintain a certain distance between the paneling and the chimney? I've tried calling the chimney sweep, but they're on a long holiday and no answer. Googled endlessly, but finding specific info on this is difficult. There seem to be many arbitrary answers in different threads, but there must be a regulation on what applies?

Also installing a vapor barrier in the ceiling, is it allowed to tape this to the chimney?

Note: the current ceiling is tongue and groove that is flush with the chimney, with sawdust above it. Thinking of replacing the sawdust with something less flammable... But tongue and groove, is it allowed in a fire safety inspection?

Thanks and happy new year!

The rules state that it can be a maximum of 80 degrees Celsius against surrounding building components. Chimney sweeps usually require that there is at least the thickness of two stones between the flue and the exterior. (That is, two stones in width.) Additionally, it should be sealed with a full covering of plaster on the outside.

So, it's not a problem to have wood or other normal building materials directly against the exterior of the chimney provided it is built correctly. However, one might want to avoid the most flammable materials.

Okay, thanks for the answer. One side of the chimney is not plastered (it was previously covered with wood paneling). I was thinking of framing it with steel studs and plastering that side, is it ok?

I would polish it first to ensure that it is sealed.
