Hello!

I am planning to build a carport/garage to my own measurements and need help with timber sizing. I have looked around for construction descriptions on svenskträ for a sizing guide but can't find anything that directly fits my plans.

The planned dimensions of the building are (W)3.5m x (L)5.4m (H)2.4m (roof beam) excluding eaves and it will be in snow zone 2.0.

Considering the width, I think some form of gabled roof (metal) would suit best, unless there are better constructions?

Example.

Beam: 220mm.
Roof beams (with supports): 2 pcs bolted-laminated 220mm at cc60.

Could this be a sustainable solution?

Very grateful for solutions and suggestions.

Regards, Vold

If the span is under 3.5m, then 45*220 should work. A tip is to choose better wood, i.e., a higher strength class (or place the rafters closer together).

I've built a tractor carport with home-sawn 2*8" and it holds up excellently. If the deflection is slightly larger than recommended, it doesn't bother me since I don't usually spend time on the roof.

Hello,
Here you will find what you need to size the construction. Great tools!

Ok, thanks for the response!

So, approximately, would C24 beams with dimensions 45x220 in CC60 work but be on the limit then? I prefer slightly larger dimensions to be on the safe side and stick to the rules.

Sorry for the dumb question now, but does the load increase or decrease depending on the roof construction? A gable roof in my example will weigh more in sheer weight but at the same time withstand higher stress than a "single-pitch roof" when it comes to wind and snow, right? I'm absolutely open to suggestions here and prefer to make it as simple as possible for myself since I've never built a roof before.

A similar example (see link) with slightly smaller dimensions available at byggbeskrivningar.se has both smaller dimensions, lower strength, and a higher CC distance. However, it's a "single-pitch roof" with a lower total height of 2.4m compared to my example which will likely be closer to 4m. My reasoning for considering a gable roof is that I imagine it to be a stronger type of construction at a higher height? I'm not especially worried about snow, but strong winds on a "single-pitch roof" probably catch the wind differently than a gable roof, hence the need for larger dimensions?

Thanks but I don't see any link?

I missed the link earlier, here you can find great dimensioning help:

Thank you. Yes, I'm basing a bit on the descriptions there but have difficulty applying it directly to the measurements in my planned construction.
