Hello

I am planning to remove a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and living room. The opening will be about 2.5 m, and the wall is 20 cm lightweight concrete according to the building description. There is no floor above, and the roof is flat. Therefore, I would like help calculating the appropriate dimension of a beam to replace the removed wall.

I am attaching a floor plan. It's the wall directly above "kitchen" that will be replaced by a bar counter.

Can someone respond directly or provide tips on where to turn for help? Preferably within Täby municipality. How much does it cost approximately to have someone who can look at it and make a calculation?

Is it always necessary to make a building notice when demolishing a load-bearing wall? Do you have to await a decision, or can you start the work and fix the building notice, etc., in the meantime?

  • Floor plan showing layout of rooms; wall between kitchen and living room is highlighted for planned removal.
I hired a structural engineer for the calculation of beams. I received calculations for three walls that were to be demolished and it cost around 3000 SEK, and I got drawings in pdf format. It felt like an affordable cost to have it done professionally. Of course, you could probably just go with hefty dimensions and hope it works out, which is what many do. You should file a building notification to change the layout. *cough*

How did it go for you StaffanH?

I also live in Täby and have similar "problems".

Easy to calculate if you know the dimensions on the drawing.
Would also need a sectional drawing with measurements.

I hired a structural engineer who has looked at the wall and the house. The problem was that I wanted to preserve the ceiling in the living room on one side of the wall because it looks fresh and it would be an unnecessary cost to redo it. Since there are concrete slabs that join/terminate on the load-bearing wall, we would have to support on both sides before demolition. Since the ceiling in the living room is covered with fabric, it would likely get damaged, and I wanted to avoid that if possible.

The engineer came up with the solution to make grooves in the lightweight concrete on both sides of the wall about 15-20 cm from the ceiling. In the grooves, you attach an L- or V-beam on each side. Then it's just a matter of tearing down the wall. The drawings should be ready today, I hope. Everything would cost about 4000 SEK.

Does anyone know of a place where you can buy steel beams? Preferably in the northern suburbs.

Wondering how it went, and what amount you had to pay? I am in the same situation and wonder if it's worth starting to apply for building permits, etc., or if the cost is too high. Grateful for a reply.
