We are in the process of building a standalone carport with dimensions 3200 mm x 5000 mm, height 2000 mm on the low side and 2400 mm on the high side, four posts on each side anchored in 70 cm pillars with adjustable post shoes. The roof covering is intended to be seam metal (click metal) with a base of raw boards. Snow zone 2.5.
The frame is up, now it’s time for the roof beams, but we are unsure if 45 x 145 is sufficient? We have based it on a drawing from Svenskt Trä https://www.byggbeskrivningar.se/pd...Byggbeskrivningar.ashx?File=8785&Doc=Broschyr but adjusted it slightly to reduce the height. Instead of letting the roof beams rest on top of the 2 load-bearing beams (as described in the drawing) we have built a "box" from 4 pieces of 45 x 145 (2 load-bearing beams of 5000 mm and 2 roof beams of 3200 mm, see attached image). In this "box" we then intend to screw in the remaining 4 roof beams of 45 x 145.
What do you think? Is there a risk that the roof will be too unstable/won't be strong enough to walk on when it’s time for the roof covering?
Kind regards, Astrid
PS I have tried using the dimensioning tool on Svenskt Trä, but the model available there does not match our construction.
45x145 is a bit weak. It will bend down in an unsightly manner. The click sheet requires a flat roof. If you don't want to go up and shovel snow every time it has snowed, you should use 45x220 C 24.
Hello Justusandersson, and thank you for the welcome to the forum!
Many thanks also for your response about our planned choice of roof beams! As enthusiastic amateurs, we gratefully accept all the tips we can get. We've thought it over again and wonder if it "helps" if we increase the number of roof beams from 4 to 6, but continue with the chosen path of 45 x 145? The reason is that we have already set 45 x 145 in the "box" and (preferably) want to avoid different dimensions in the roof construction.
An alternative might be to switch to alternating 45 x 145/45 x 190 to stabilize the roof? Or glulam beams? Or any other wise tips?
Very grateful for feedback!
Good evening for now, and until we hear from you again
Hello Astrid!
Increasing the number of beams reduces the load on each beam, so it's always positive. With 6 beams, you could go down to 45x195, but that might not be a solution. In that case, it's better to screw and glue together 45x145 in pairs and use 6 such double beams. There are solutions with glulam as well, but it will probably be more expensive.
Thanks, what a great tip with double beams! We're going with your suggestion and are thrilled to avoid compromising the inner dimensions and aesthetics.
While we're at it; what kind of tar paper is the wisest to use? A Google search yesterday showed a lot of different types...
Hello! Always rewarding if the thread can end with some pictures of the final result. I am planning to build roughly the same size Carport and intend to use the same construction description.
Hi gaston12!
Finally, here are some pictures. The metal roof will have to wait until spring, but the felt can last a year without covering. I can add that we are very happy with the result.
Best regards, Astrid
