I need to replace parts of the posts of a balcony. The previous owner painted with plastic paint and neglected to keep soil and vegetation away. I plan to scrape the paint, wire brush away the rotten wood, replace timber where necessary, and repaint with linseed oil paint.
There are a total of 6 posts, of which (at least) two are partially rotten just above the beam (45x195) they rest on:
I also need to replace parts of the beams:
I plan to support with a prop, then cut out from the posts and splice in new timber. I think I have a reasonably good plan on how to proceed, but I wanted to double-check here with you.
I will repair the beams by supporting, cutting away the rotten parts, and splicing on a new beam by screwing a piece of beam on the backside with construction screws (e.g., 8x80).
The posts are hollow and built of 4 boards (approx. 115x35 as it seems), meaning the posts' dimension is 150x150. What timber should I use? I thought of cutting a construction beam (45x170) and also have deck timber (non-impregnated larch 28x120) that I could use instead, but 28 mm might be a bit thin in a post?
Should I use pressure-treated timber? The post will be painted with linseed oil paint and will not have ground contact in the future, but it might get some rain and snow at times when it's windy, as the balcony roof doesn't extend very far out.
I thought of setting the prop against the beams outside the post in the roof construction:
