We are building a house and there is supposed to be a balcony above the entrance supported by 2 wooden pillars. The constructor has drawn these as 115x115 laminated timber, but since I have my own saw, I have requested another solution that is not laminated timber. However, I am having communication problems with the constructor (he doesn't understand why I'm questioning his solutions). I finally got a solution with 3x 45x120 nailed together with 2x 28x145.

What I'm wondering is if it's possible to use solid wooden pillars (e.g., 6x6 inches or thicker?) instead of laminated timber or nailed beams. I've given up on getting another answer from the constructor ☹️.

Hahaha what?
Of course, you should cut your own pillars!
I see NO problems with that, and you can choose the best timber.
Make sure no water gets into the construction, and it will last forever.

If you cut so the marrow remains, it will crack.
That can be charming too.
Alternatively, cut 3 inches by 6, dry, plane, and glue with waterproof glue.

It's likely that your self-produced timber is neither CE marked nor strength graded, so the designer is not willing to take any responsibility. However, it's surely not a problem to replace, so you can swap it out at your own risk.

That could definitely be the case. He could have just said that instead of answering everything I didn't ask 13 times.

How long is the column and what load does it have on it?

It is a balcony over the entrance that extends 2.3m out from the facade and then rests on 2 columns.

It sounds like your designer is young and inexperienced. A couple of columns of that caliber do not need to be calculated. But if he still feels the need to calculate the columns, it's no big challenge for an average designer.

Who said this is the reason?
