Hello.

Our designer has calculated that we need to support the ridge beam with a glulam column 115x315. The vertical load is 46kN and the column is 5.90 meters high.

I would like to replace it with a more slender steel column instead. Anyone knowledgeable?

Your engineer should know. Ask the engineer to calculate on steel instead of glulam. The engineer has to do it anyway if the drawing is to be changed.

I think you can go down to about half the height with steel columns.

A square steel column with the same buckling strength should be somewhere around 100x100 mm with approximately 5 mm thickness if the column is free-standing.
