I'm going to plaster an interior wall in the basement where I have removed paneling. The wall is quite uneven, there's an area on the wall that has been plastered previously but is quite uneven. The plaster on that area feels very fine and hard, seems to be something finer than plaster mortar C. The paint on the wall is very thin, I think it might be lime paint but I'm not sure.

Now to the question of how I should proceed. I've bought Finjas plaster mortar C. I've thought about applying plaster mesh. Do I also need to use some kind of base mortar first? Then I'm wondering how I should attach the mesh. Staples won't work (those U-shaped ones) because the concrete is very hard. Filja's Universal Fasteners are only sold in bulk (becomes a bit unnecessarily expensive). I've seen that Byggmax also has some kind of fastener, has anyone tested it? Or do I even need a mesh at all? The wall is very uneven, so in some places, I will need to apply several layers.

The end result doesn't need to be a completely horizontal/vertical wall; what I'm mainly after is a somewhat smooth wall.

  • Uneven basement wall prepared for plastering, showing exposed surface with tools and materials scattered on the floor. Ceiling beams visible above.
  • Rough, uneven basement wall with patches of old plaster; visible texture and discoloration suggest previous limewash and hard surface.
  • Uneven basement wall with remnants of plaster, needing smoothing; wooden ceiling and exposed concrete are visible.
