Hello,

I'm planning to run a network cable through an interior wall and thus need to drill through it. Halfway through, I encounter metal. What could this be, and is it safe to just drill right through it?

Image 1 shows with the red circles roughly where I want to drill through. Behind the door frame, there's an old antenna cable or something similar that exits.

Image 2 shows what it looks like if you take a photo into the cavity where the antenna cable exits. The gray part in the middle of the image I believe is the edge of the metal plate that I encounter when trying to drill.

Image 3 shows the wall from the other side where I've attempted to drill.

  • Doorframe corner with floorboards, a white cable, and red circles marking areas for drilling network cable through the wall.
  • View into a wall cavity with a metal surface visible, indicating an obstacle while drilling for network cable installation.
  • Power outlet on a white wall with a drilled hole near the baseboard. Wood flooring and white door frame visible. Construction debris on the floor.

Just go for it, it's alllll good...

Looks like regular metal studs. If you're going to run network cables there, the main thing to consider is to secure them so they don't move more than necessary and damage the insulation.
If you're going to run electricity, you'll need a conduit or other protection.
