We have a straight pine staircase that we plan to enclose and paint white, with new easy-to-clean carpet on the steps. Does anyone have tips and advice, especially on how to enclose it so that it looks nice?

There are semicircular stair mats at Ellos for example.

Consider the slip risk, a colleague lost a father-in-law in a repainted staircase where a needle-punched carpet was removed, deceased due to neck fracture.

Stair treads are stylish. There is also anti-slip tape that can look okay,

Now TS would lay carpet, and it's not slippery. We have a pine staircase that is painted white, and then they glued gray carpet or needle felt onto it. Nice, safe, and to my surprise, it stays fresh.

Haven't you thought about enclosing with glass? I'm considering that at home :)

I'm dreading a similar job with our staircase...
I'm a bit on the fence about whether we should close it off or not.
I want the light to come in but I'm tired of all the dirt that falls down when the dogs run up and down.

We cut the MDF to size and screwed it to the back of the steps, it's still holding 4 years later.

Wooden stairs before and after transformation with white paint and black needle felt carpet.

A heck of a lot of sanding, then I painted first with primer and then with Beckers floor paint on the advice of a painter, he said it would be durable, and it's still holding up 2-3 years later. Added a black needle-punch carpet. I think it turned out well.

#Ropia Nice job! However, I see that you haven't finished the entire staircase.
For our part, we'll start with two layers of Jotun kvist- och spärrgrundning to prevent knots from showing. Then one or two layers of covering floor paint.

#lobbin Did you only screw into the back of the steps or did you also attach the MDF with a support strip at the top edge?

How is the carpet secured at the front edge of the step? Is it clamped with a strip or is it enough to just glue it?

An old worn oak strip sticking up. The old green plastic mat was recessed, you could say. I think the new carpet just needs to be cut to size and glued.

Here's how it turned out. Half-moons from Jotex or something similar.

Enclosed staircase with black half-moon step covers, a bike, and cardboard nearby, illuminated by a spherical ceiling light.

Lovely to have some pictures for inspiration...

I didn't need to rebuild my staircase, but this is how it turned out after painting it light gray and adding gray stair carpets.

BEFORE (poor image):

A dark, unfinished staircase before renovation, with wooden railings and steps visible.

AFTER:

Light gray staircase with dark gray stair mats and tropical wallpaper on the side, showcasing a renovation with new paint and mats.

I got the railing with lighting up today and then you really see that the stairs need to be fixed...
