I have an old chimney where a gas boiler was previously connected. The chimney is no longer used - neither on the floor below nor above.

The plan is to remove part of it so that I get a 90-degree corner in the room. The right side of the chimney I can thus keep.

As far as I can see, the chimney has no other function, such as supporting the floor structure. When I read up on how to do it, it seems the process is similar to tearing down a load-bearing wall - you have to offset/release it in some way.

My questions are:
  • What does the workflow look like in practice?
  • Do you start by removing bricks from the middle up and then support the upper rows?
  • How do you make a permanent release before installing a new ceiling?

Old brick chimney partially demolished, rubble on the floor, exposed ceiling beams, and nearby toilet with renovation tools in a room corner. Old chimney with exposed brick and surrounding wooden lath strips, insulation visible behind, related to partial removal and structural support.
