Have a barn currently covered with asbestos cement sheets. The sheets rest on battens attached directly to the rafters. Roof pitch is 40 degrees, about 8 meters fall. Snow zone 2 (just bordering 1.5).

The battens are 147×75 mm attached on edge to the rafters. The center-to-center distance between the battens is 1100 mm (along the length with the fall).

The rafters are spaced 3 meters apart except for one section that is 4.5 meters apart.

Now to my question;

To replace the asbestos with a metal roof and condensation barrier underneath, is it necessary to add new battens so the center-to-center measurement is 550 mm for the metal roof to hold? And can I use 145×45 or does it need to be another larger dimension, and if so, which one? The span between the rafters remains the same (about 3 meters).

Different types of roofing sheets have different load-bearing capacities. Here I must refer to the manufacturers' instructions to achieve a durable result.
