Hi,

I'm renovating the kitchen and replacing the old wooden panels with drywall while taking down the walls to relocate electrical boxes. How strong is drywall really? There will be some upper cabinets on the wall, but I'm skeptical if a single layer of drywall can handle the pressure. I can't use double drywall, as it would be too tight to fit the new kitchen. :)

To reinforce behind the drywall, I planned to strengthen with a plywood board behind the drywall, mounted only where the upper cabinets will go. I'll have to cut the plywood to fit between the studs since it would also be too thick if I placed it fully behind the drywall.

Hmm, well, my question is simply if I need to reinforce with plywood, or if a 13 mm drywall is strong enough to attach the upper cabinets with molly plugs.

(I haven't worked with drywall before, so I don't have a direct sense of how strong it is.)

Yes, you need to reinforce with something, e.g., an extra cross brace where the cabinets are to be attached, if you're going to remove the current wall covering anyway.

Exactly, what you do is you install crossbars, so-called kortlingar..

Okay, then it will be so, just have to find out at what height the kortling should be placed...
