I'm considering a budget renovation of my porch so it looks decent for at least a couple more years. It all started when I was going to re-stain the decking but discovered that the actual fence/railing had started to rot at the bottom edge. After removing it, I discovered that the decking was also rotted through in several places on the right side where I don't have a roof.
Under the decking, there is concrete and all the water has run down and collected on the concrete on the right.
So now I'm wondering if anyone has tips on how I should proceed. My current plan is to cut away the decking on the right and place a crosswise board in the same way as the one on the far left in the picture so that all the decking is under the roof. But what do I do with the bare concrete slab on the right? Can I put something there that is waterproof and doesn't cost a fortune?
I also have a question about the railing itself, does anyone have any tips on something relatively simple I can throw together? I was thinking I might be able to use the old top rails and build something simple with 45x45 studs perhaps.
