Hello all DIY enthusiasts!
I just installed a bookshelf in the basement. To make room for it, I had to scrape off plaster from one of the walls, which doesn't matter much since that wall is covered by the bookshelf anyway.
However, a gasoline-like smell is now spreading from the area where I scraped. What could it be? Hazardous to health? I scraped at most half a centimeter deep.

I have masonry walls in the basement and the bottom course is painted with some kind of oil-based moisture barrier to prevent damp from creeping up the wall, so I guess you have something similar. It really smells like old gasoline
thanks for the reply! Yes, it might be that. It does smell just like old gasolineC Carl Johansson said:
Well, I guess I'll have to air it out until it's gone..
