Hello!

I'm planning to build a root cellar, but I'm wondering how we should solve the roof and various questions have come up. An arch that is a semicircle can handle a lot of weight, but how much?
Can you get away with having an arch that is less than 180 degrees? How much less?

It is a building technique that is ancient. It is not entirely easy to calculate arches because there are many parameters. Simply put, the shape of the arch corresponds to the line of thrust, which does not need to be circular. Nor does the arch need to be 180°. Churches and old brick buildings are suitable study objects. There are older manuals on masonry, and there are manuals on earth cellars that you can look up.
