Hi, I recently bought a house, we have these cracks in our garage wall, is it something to worry about? Unfortunately, it's not possible to see if there's a corresponding crack on the other side of the wall as there's wooden paneling outside the concrete there.

  • Crack in a garage wall with peeling paint, a red shovel leaning against it, and electrical cables hanging nearby.
  • Cracks on a yellow garage wall with metal brackets, potentially indicating structural concerns.
The crack is definitely through-going, a sättning that may or may not still be active.

It was no small crack. The crack is likely due to settling. It would be interesting to know how long the crack has been there and whether it has gotten bigger or not. There is a risk of settling during new construction. But if settling occurs after that, one should perhaps consider what the cause might be. I wouldn't feel comfortable having it like that without knowing more.

I understand. It's unclear how long the crack has been there, it was there 2 months ago during the viewing but I seem to remember it being smaller, hence my concern. The house was built in 1966. What I can do is call the previous owner and see what he knows, we also have an inspector coming on 10/21. Is there anything else I should do?
