We bought a very large, old, and charming house but with many obvious renovations needed. The kitchen and living room are in the same room. The previous owner had attached Styrofoam tiles to the ceiling in the kitchen, which have yellowed and are grotesque because it's obvious what they are... Styrofoam!!!! We thought, let's just pull it off the original ceiling. Said and done. Oh my God. Then there were 1 million gray hard cement-like blobs that he had glued the Styrofoam with, at first we tried to chip them away but it was incredibly time-consuming since there were 1 million of them. We tore down the entire original ceiling and put up a new plasterboard ceiling.

But he has put these Styrofoam tiles everywhere in the house. In the large hallway (which we will probably have to do something similar to the kitchen).... But the worst part. The living room has a very high ceiling, between 5-6 meters up. In the middle of the ceiling, the idiot has placed Styrofoam ceiling tiles, on the sides, there are ordinary ceiling tiles of some sort. When we bought the house, we had an idea that we would make a wood panel ceiling...

But here we sit under the ugly ceiling looking up at the disgusting Styrofoam and we have no idea how to fix this... We have people around us who are skilled and handy. But I'm writing here to see if others have advice and tips... What would you have done??

Posting pictures... And also of the kitchen we remodeled with the ceiling and walls (not finished though, the kitchen module and countertop etc. will be changed)

  • Loft-style living room with exposed beams, high ceiling, light fan, wooden staircase, and large windows; partially renovated space with eclectic decor.
  • Ceiling with yellowed polystyrene tiles and a dirty ceiling fan, showing renovation challenges and outdated design in an old house.
  • Recently renovated kitchen with new gypsum ceiling, recessed lighting, wooden cabinets, and large windows. Unfinished areas with open drawers and scattered balloons.

Sure, you can delete or edit during the first hour.
Just click on the three dots at the bottom right of the post.

It's probably some kind of clumsy attempt at additional insulation.
Regular polystyrene is also flammable and releases unpleasant toxins when it burns, so I would remove it all.

Just rent and assemble a small mobile aluminum scaffold in the living room, climb up, remove the ceiling tiles, and nail up the panel you plan to have there.
