Have started removing the trellis, but I'm wondering about the first post that was somewhat thicker than the other posts. Surely it can't take any load from the upper floor? Shouldn't the staircase opening be reinforced and function without the staircase being there? The wall to the right of the staircase in the picture is load-bearing.

  • Wooden staircase with balustrade partially removed; prominent post in question. Right wall is load-bearing. Renovation materials visible in the background.
What does it sound like when you turn it on? Does it vibrate with a low or high tone? No guarantee for anything, but maybe an indication.

Rather low than high pitch... I have loosened it in the ceiling fixture and you can knock it away with a couple of slaps with an open palm.. Additionally, it is attached at the lower part to the stairs, not the floor, but maybe that doesn't matter?

But isn't it the case that you always support a staircase opening when building? I mean the staircase isn't there until after a while...??

Just as you say, it should be supported without a truss, but it's a bit different for different stairs. However, if the wall on the right is load-bearing, I can't imagine that you can't remove it. You have no post inside the house within the staircase as far as I can see in the picture, and it holds up.
