I'm renovating the basement. And chunks of plaster are coming off. Behind it looks like asbestos.. do you know what else it could be? Why would there be asbestos in the basement wall? The house was built in 1938

What do you think?

  • Crumbling plaster on basement wall with exposed area, possibly asbestos, discovered during renovation of a house built in 1938.
  • Close-up of crumbling plaster on a basement wall with fibrous material exposed, possibly asbestos, from a house built in 1938.

I would say they are salt crystals. This indicates active moisture exposure (from outside).

Thanks for the quick reply! What a relief. I got short of breath and a bit of anxiety. But it went away immediately.

Yes, the wall has been damp and bad for 40 years. So now I’m tearing it down and going to fix it. Thanks for the help
